Instructional Design Job Locations
The goal of instructional design is to maximize the efficiency of the teaching process by making instructional methods more effective and the learning experience more appealing to the student. It is also known as Instructional Systems Design (ISD). It usually specifies a certain method for the facilitation of skills and knowledge, and is traditionally and historically rooted in behavioral and cognitive science.
There are basically three stages of instructional design. First, the current knowledge and skill level of the learner is determined. Then the end goal of the instruction is carefully defined. And lastly, some kind of intervention method is developed to assist the student in the learning process.
With the advent of the Internet 30 years ago a whole new dimension has been added to instructional design. Before that instructional design dealt mainly with a setting where student and teacher met face-to-face. With the advance of computer technology, however, eLearning with specifically designed courseware has become very common. An instructional designer now develops scripts, analyses requirements with regard to content and evaluates the programs for its teaching effectiveness.
There are plenty of job openings for instructional designers in the United States. In the south of the US there are instructional designer jobs in San Antonio available. Companies like Technisource, Millennium Group or Sapphire Technologies are looking currently for skilled personnel.
In Florida companies like General Dynamics, Skillstorm and Ryder System are actively searching for instructional designers. They are located in Orlando, Jacksonville and Miami, respectively. These are but a few examples of companies where qualified instructional designers are sought.
Instructional designers with a sense of adventure and a thirst of knowledge for foreign cultures may look for instructional designer jobs in Singapore, Hong Kong or other locations like India. The pay may be nominally less than an instructional designer might expect in the US or Europe. But it works out about the same when taking into account the lower level of the cost of living.
